Fed: Diplomats set to return to Islamabad

Australia's first diplomatic foray to visit two aid workers detained by Afghanistan's
ruling Taliban looks set to fail but foreign minister ALEXANDER DOWNER has vowed to fight
on.

West Australians DIANA THOMAS and PETER BUNCH, as well as two Americans, four Germans
and 16 Afghanis were arrested by the Taliban more than two weeks ago for allegedly spreading
Christianity.

Consuls from Australia, Germany and the US flew into the Afghan capital, Kabul, last week.

Their visas expire tomorrow and the Taliban has refused to extend them, leaving the
diplomats with no option but to return to their missions in Islamabad in neighbouring
Pakistan.

Mr DOWNER says he's disappointed the diplomatic effort has achieved little so far.

He says governments and aid organisations worldwide are concerned about the arrests.

And Mr DOWNER says the Australian government will continue to work tirelessly to secure
the release of the two Australians.

The 24 arrested aid-workers -- all staff of the German-based Shelter Now refugee relief
agency -- are accused of spreading Christianity, illegal under Taliban law.
